It is the end of July which means it is time to introduce you to July’s Roofing Academy Member of the Month. This month we have the honor of introducing you to Matt Collins. Matt is a third generation contractor and the owner of Collins and Sons Roofing in Conway, Arkansas.

Like his father and grandfather before him, Matt firmly believes that every single one of his clients is part of the Collins and Sons family. Because of this he feels he has a responsibility to deliver the best possible results on every roofing job.

Outside of the office Matt is family man through and through. His five — soon to be six —children keep him extremely busy, but he also has a passion for music and a talent for quite a few instruments.

Get to know Matt below and be sure not to skip over this third generation contractor’s roofing advice!

How long have you been in the roofing industry?

I’ve been in the roofing industry for 20 years.

What is your favorite part about working in the roofing industry?

My favorite part about my job is solving people’s problems. My family has been in roofing for over 70 years and I’m a third generation roofing contractor. When I meet with customers and they tell me that my father and grandfather both roofed their house at some point I feel a responsibility to do the very best possible, and not only for them, but for everyone. It’s a constant reminder to always do what is right no matter the cost.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

The most challenging thing for me is not having enough help and/or not delegating. I’m in my comfort zone by doing more. I know it will be done how I like.

How long have you been a member of the Roofing Academy?

I have been a member for almost two years.

What is the most valuable part of your Roofing Academy Membership?

The most value I’ve gotten out of it is surrounding myself with people that I can get advice from. Randy has helped me see things differently than I have before.

What advice would you give a newcomer to the roofing industry?

The advice I would give is get with someone that has done what you want to do and learn the process. Get the process down before getting started and what ever the cost always treat people right. You never lose when you do the right thing.

What was your first job ever?

I started out roofing so that was my first job. I tell people I was born with a hammer in my hand.

What does your ideal day off look like?

I love taking my boys fishing, shooting guns and hanging with the family.

Favorite food?

Mexican food is probably my favorite food. I eat mostly chicken so that would be my favorite bird, ha!

Favorite TV Show or Sports Team?

I don’t have time for tv and I’m not really a sports fan either. People ask what I do to pass time. Usually if I watch something It’s roofing videos on YouTube.  I own a roofing company and have five children with one on the way, so I don’t get a lot of free time.

One fun fact about yourself!

I can play the drums, guitar, bass guitar and piano. I also love to sing.
