This September, the Roofing Academy is excited to feature not one, but two Roofing Academy Member’s of the Month! This month’s honor goes to Matt and Melissa Munro, owners of Rampart Roofing in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Matt and Melissa have spent the past twelve years running a successful roofing business together, while raising a family, and still managing to take advantage of all that Colorado has to offer in their limited free time.

If doing all of that seems impossible to you, you’ll definitely want to keep reading to learn how Matt and Melissa juggle it all! And don’t forget to congratulate them for being September’s Member of the Month in the comments.

Names: Matt Munro and Melissa Munro

Company Name: Rampart Roofing

Roles: Co-Owners and Co-Founders

Location: Colorado Springs, Colorado

How long have you been in the roofing industry?

Matt: 24 years

Melissa: Since our company opened in 2009

What is your favorite part about working in the roofing industry?

Matt: Seeing people succeed. It’s one of the only industries where ambitious people with or without a degree and regardless of background can make well into 6 figures. It’s really satisfying to be part of that.

Melissa:  Working “on” the business with my husband and co-owner and getting to travel together for training/business planning; seeing others succeed as part of our business.

What is the most challenging part about your role or the roofing industry?

Matt: Keeping it all spinning; keeping continuity between the departments and the personalities. TRA has helped me realize that strong systems help resolve this challenge; they’ve helped us develop and implement them.

Melissa: Managing a work “family” and our family.

How long have you been a member of the Roofing Academy?

Matt & Melissa: Since April 2021

What has your experience with The Roofing Academy been like?

Matt: Fantastic! After 24 years I was set in some ways that needed to evolve. Randy and his team have been awesome. They’re always more than willing to help.

Melissa: Awesome. We’ve been a part of other coaching/training experiences but this has been the best fit! Randy and his team came along at just the right time in our business to help push us forward and grow with focus.

What advice would you give a newcomer to the roofing industry?

Matt: I’d congratulate them. I’d remind them to believe in their dreams and to set goals accordingly and then take massive action.

Melissa:  Hire good people to help you–don’t go it alone even if the numbers are tight. A good business coach can help you find your strengths and weaknesses, then fill in the weaknesses with good people with strong character and commitment. Good people will help you make the numbers.

What was your first job ever?

Matt: A re-roof with Elk shingles. I was on my way to pick up the contract and got stopped for speeding. Turned out I had a warrant for arrest; fishing without a licence and I didn’t show up for the court date. That was a few years earlier and I’d forgotten about it. This was before cell phones, so it was a no call no show to that appointment, but I managed to save it and to save my job.

Melissa: Cleaning apartments after move-outs.

What does your ideal day off look like?

Matt: Spending it with family and friends and doing fun stuff like skiing, biking, skateboarding, running, and playing games.

Melissa: A long hike in the mountains or near the beach on the northwest coast.

Favorite Food?

Matt: Homemade tacos

Melissa: A slice of vegan pizza from Slice 420

Favorite Sports Team or TV Show?

Matt: Denver Broncos

Melissa: Mrs. Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

One Fun Fact About Yourself!

Matt: I got a Onewheel earlier this year. It’s a small electric vehicle. I love riding it. I feel like a kid again when I’m on it.

Melissa: I still like my husband after 12 years of working together! 🙂
